Shadow Boxing explores the tension between light and shadow within ourselves. Developed through a deeply collaborative and interdisciplinary process, the work blends contemporary ballet, live composition, and multimedia, including original audio and video content drawn from the dancers’ personal explorations. The piece invites audiences into an immersive experience that centers identity, transformation, and personal narrative.

Project Development:

The creation process began with solo studio sessions between Schreter, composer Rasheedat Badejo and each dancer. Dancers responded to the prompt, “What cycle are you coming to the end of?” through improvised movement and verbal conversation, which were both recorded and used to generate the choreography, musical score, and projected media. This source material became both the inspiration and the material foundation of the final work, merging personal stories into a collective reflection and exploration.

“Shadow Boxing” was initially developed while in residence at Chapman Steamer Arts in Newburgh NY, with the support of the New York State Danceforce Emerging Choreographer’s Initiative Award.

This work is unfinished and currently still in process.
